🎓 Academic and Professional Background

Magda Gioia is an Associate Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Rome Tor Vergata, with a robust academic foundation in biochemistry and molecular biology. She earned her Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Rome ‘Tor Vergata’ in 2005 and completed her Master’s in Biological Sciences at Roma Tre University in 2000. Her professional journey is marked by tenure-track and professorial roles, culminating in a Full Professor qualification in Italy in 2022.

Her research has significantly advanced biochemical and enzymatic processes, particularly through the DEGRADOMICs: CLIP-TAILs project, which introduced groundbreaking proteomic methods for identifying metalloprotease substrates. Currently, her work bridges structural biology and cellular biology, focusing on osteogenesis under pathological stimuli, bone resorption in microgravity, and mechanobiology in cancer cells.

🔬 Areas of Research

Magda’s research spans the dynamic fields of biochemistry, cell biochemistry, and mechanobiology. Her innovative contributions explore the biochemical mechanisms underlying cancer metastasis, osteogenesis, and microgravity-induced bone resorption.

🌍 Contributions to Research and Innovation

Motivated by the aggressive nature of osteosarcoma (OS) and the limitations of existing therapies, Magda’s research investigates how biophysical forces influence OS cell behavior. Through cutting-edge technologies like uniaxial stretch technology, advanced microscopy, and molecular assays, her studies have revealed:

Nuclear size alterations and changes in the nuclear-to-cytoplasmic ratio in OS cells under mechanical stimulation.

Activation of mechanosensitive (MS) channels, resulting in reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, Src modulation, and histone H3 acetylation.

Impacts on cell motility, adhesion, and drug resistance, all critical factors in tumor progression.

📜 Professional Memberships

Magda is an active member of various prestigious professional organizations and societies dedicated to advancing biochemical research and innovation.
