🎓 Academic Background and Early Research
Dr. Simona Lago earned her Master’s degree in Physics in December 1998 from the Università del Piemonte Orientale “Amedeo Avogadro”. Her thesis, titled “Characterisation and use of an experimental device for precise measurements of the speed of sound in gases,” laid the foundation for her lifelong interest in physical acoustics and metrology. She further enriched her academic profile through a Ph.D. in Metrology: Science and Technique of Measurements from the Politecnico di Torino, awarded in March 2005, under the joint supervision of Professor J. P. M. Trusler from Imperial College London. Her doctoral work focused on the thermodynamic properties of pure water, achieving high-accuracy measurements of the speed of sound over wide ranges of temperature (274–394 K) and pressure (up to 90 MPa).
🧪 Research Experience and Technical Contributions
Dr. Lago’s early career included placements and fellowships at esteemed institutions. She worked on smart card and biometric authentication technologies at CSELT (Telecom Italia Group) in 1999–2000, and soon after, contributed to optical metrology at INOA Florence. In 2001, her work at the Galileo Ferraris Institute deepened her expertise in precision measurements of the speed of sound in liquids. Between 2002 and 2005, she served as an Assistant Teacher for Physics I and II at Politecnico of Vercelli. Her international research was further expanded with a work placement at Imperial College London in 2004, focusing on density and temperature measurements of bubble and dew points using pVT apparatus. From 2005 to 2009, she held a research fellowship at the Thermodynamic Division of INRiM, where she advanced experimental methodologies in acoustic metrology of fluids, targeting precision speed of sound measurements. Her later work at INRiM included contributions to regenerative medicine (METREGEN) and biofuel metrology, showcasing her versatility in applying physical acoustics across disciplines. Since 2010, she has been a dedicated researcher at INRiM, and as of 2023, she holds the title of Senior Researcher.
🔬 Research Interests and Scientific Impact
Dr. Lago’s research is deeply rooted in experimental thermodynamics and fluid transport properties. She specializes in measuring density and speed of sound in compressed liquids and fluid mixtures, particularly under high pressure and varying temperature conditions. Her work is instrumental in validating and enhancing thermodynamic and statistical-mechanical models. She frequently investigates complex mixtures involving CO₂, hydrogen, sustainable fuels, and refrigerants, employing custom-designed apparatuses developed in-house. With over 36 peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Lago has made substantial contributions to the fields of metrology, energy, and thermodynamics.
🏆 Awards and Recognitions
Dr. Lago’s excellence has been consistently recognized by the scientific community. She was the winner of the “Amedeo Giacomini Prize” in 1999, awarded by Associazione Italiana di Acustica (AIA) for the best thesis in physical acoustics. She also secured a research grant at IMGC Turin for her work in optical interferometry. Her Ph.D. thesis earned her the “Gino Sacerdote Prize” in 2006, further affirming the impact of her research. She went on to win the “Italo Barducci Prize” in both 2007 and 2008, and in 2009, she received the “Poster Giovani Prize” for the most outstanding poster presentation by a young researcher, all from AIA.
