🎓Educational Qualification

Dr. Seram Dushila Devi completed her Ph.D. in Chemistry from Manipur University, India in 2012. Her doctoral research focused on “Thermodynamic Investigations on the Solvent Hydrophobicity and its Effect on the Micellar Behaviour of Some Ionic Surfactants”. She also holds a MSc in Chemistry with a specialization in Physical Chemistry from Manipur University (2004).

Dr. Devi has received several prestigious grants and awards, including the UGC-BSR Start-up Grant (2017-2019) for her project titled, “Investigations on the I2/KI-Polymer Complexes of Some Water-Soluble Polymers and its Blends in Water-Organic Solvent Mixed Media.” She was also awarded the Direct CSIR-Research Associate (RA) position in 2014 for her research on self-aggregation of cyanine dyes in the presence of water-soluble polymers and entrapment of the dye aggregates in polymer gel. Dr. Devi has also worked as a Senior Research Fellow (SRF) in a CSIR-Sponsored Research Project (2008-2011) on dye-induced thermochromism in polymer gel network materials. Dr. Devi has been a recipient of the State Merit Scholarship starting from her Matriculation (10th standard) all the way through to her M.Sc. degree.

Dr. Devi’s research interests span several cutting-edge areas in Physical Chemistry. Her primary focus is on self-aggregation systems, particularly surfactants and dyes in aqueous and mixed aqueous-organic media. Her studies include the effects of polymers and salts additives on these systems. Dr. Devi is particularly interested in exploring dye-surfactant and polymer-surfactant interactions in various media. Another major area of her research is the study of polymer-iodine interactions and the iodine/iodide equilibrium in mixed media in the presence of surfactants. Additionally, Dr. Devi has worked on the development of soft intelligent materials such as thermochromic polymer gels and polymer blends, which exhibit unique properties in the presence of surfactants. Her research also covers the clouding phenomenon of polymer, particularly HPC (Hydroxypropyl Cellulose), when exposed to electrolytes and surfactants.

In my current role as a Project Assistant, I am involved in a collaborative research project with Boeing focused on optimizing the curing time of Momentive RTV 106 and 108 sealants. By adjusting the resin and hardener compositions, our team successfully reduced the curing time from 24 hours to 12-13 hours without compromising critical properties like Shore A hardness, corrosion resistance, peel strength, and lap shear strength. The project adheres to strict industry standards, and I continue to refine sealant compositions for better performance.

Through this project, I have developed expertise in various characterization techniques, including X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Tensile and Compressive Testing (UTM), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM).

This project centered on the green synthesis of carbon quantum dots from bio-waste such as hibiscus, papaya, and Mexican mint. Utilizing a hydrothermal synthesis approach, the carbon dots were characterized for detecting heavy metal ions like Fe³⁺, Hg²⁺, Cr⁶⁺, and Pb²⁺. A variety of techniques such as centrifugation, UV-Vis Spectrophotometry, Photoluminescence, FTIR, X-ray Diffraction, Raman Spectroscopy, and TEM were used to analyze the properties of the synthesized nanoparticles. This project highlighted sustainable approaches for the detection of heavy metal ions using eco-friendly methods.
