Educational Qualifications
Dr. Husain earned his Ph.D. in Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science from IIT Bombay in 2018, with a dissertation titled “Friction Stir Welding of Steel.” He completed his M.Tech in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering from IIT Kharagpur in 2008, focusing on “Corrosion Behavior of Ni-based Nanocomposite.” His academic journey began with a B.Sc. Engineering degree in Metallurgical Engineering from BIT Sindri, Dhanbad, in 2006, where he explored the “Effect of Micro Alloying Elements on Mechanical Properties of Hot Rolled Coils.”
Professional Experience
Dr. Md Murtuja Husain is currently serving as a Principal Scientist at CSIR–National Metallurgical Laboratory (CSIR-NML), Jamshedpur, under the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. He began his professional journey as a Junior Scientist (2008–2011) and steadily rose through the ranks as Scientist (2011–2015), Senior Scientist (2015–2020), and since 2020, has been holding the position of Principal Scientist. With over 16 years of experience in research and development, Dr. Husain has made significant contributions to the field of materials science and metallurgy.
Research Experience & Interests
Dr. Husain’s research expertise lies in Materials Joining and Welding, especially in solid-state welding and processing techniques. He has extensively worked on establishing structure–property correlations, conducting materials characterization, and developing light alloys such as magnesium (Mg) and aluminum (Al) and their composites. His work also includes failure analysis of engineering components, contributing critical insights into industrial materials performance and reliability.
Research Projects & Mentorship
With a rich background in project leadership, Dr. Husain has been the Principal Investigator (PI) for over 20 sponsored and basic research projects. Additionally, he has served as Co-PI or project team member in more than 30 projects. He is actively mentoring a Ph.D. scholar working on the synthesis and evaluation of magnesium metal matrix composites for biomedical applications, along with guiding 3 M.Tech theses and supervising 16 undergraduate internships.
Academic & Corporate Training
As an Associate Professor at AcSIR, Dr. Husain contributes to shaping future scientists through academic instruction. He has also conducted 15 corporate training sessions as a faculty and technical trainer, sharing his deep domain expertise with professionals across industries.
Honors & Recognitions
Dr. Husain’s academic excellence is marked by securing an All India Rank of 164 in GATE-2005 (Metallurgical Engineering). He was awarded the 3rd prize in the lecture competition during the ICS Founder’s Day in 2010 and also won the 3rd prize in the CSIR Foundation Day English Essay Competition in 2022, showcasing his excellence in both technical and communication skills.
