🎓 Educational Background
Yiwen Luo is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison under the guidance of Associate Professor E.M. Hubbard. Beginning in September 2024, Yiwen’s studies focus on understanding the developmental changes in brain networks and their impact on academic outcomes, particularly in mathematics.
Previously, Yiwen earned a Bachelor of Science in Applied Psychology from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (CUHKSZ), graduating in June 2024. The rigorous program covered a range of subjects, including Developmental Psychology, Educational Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, and Biological Psychology, providing a comprehensive foundation in understanding human behavior and brain mechanisms.
🧠Research Interests
Yiwen’s research focuses on how developmental changes in brain networks underlying executive functions and attention influence academic performance. With a particular interest in mathematics, Yiwen employs longitudinal brain imaging analyses to uncover the neural mechanisms driving these changes. Currently, Yiwen is exploring how executive functions affect children’s performance in symbolic fraction arithmetic and comparison through innovative techniques like finger tracking and fNIRS (functional near-infrared spectroscopy).
🔬 Research Experience
As a Research Assistant at the Educational Neuroscience Lab at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Yiwen has been actively involved in projects since September 2024. Yiwen uses TrajTracker for finger and mouse tracking and has gained proficiency in analyzing fNIRS data using NIRx. These tools play a crucial role in studying mathematical cognition and neural dynamics.
During a previous position as a Research Assistant at the Shanghai Pudong Mental Health Center from May to August 2023, Yiwen conducted an extensive literature review on topics such as fatigue detection in Psychomotor Vigilance Tasks, transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS), and repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS). Yiwen also managed data collection from participants with depression through video recordings and questionnaires, while exploring instruments for measuring anhedonia and childhood depression.Additionally, Yiwen developed advanced technical skills by using MATLAB and sLORETA for EEG data preprocessing, calculating functional connectivity, and conducting Event-Related Potential (ERP) and power spectrum analysis. Yiwen also designed online questionnaires and efficiently managed data collection from depressive patients.
