Academic and Professional Background🎓

Prof. Dr. Ganka Kossekova is a distinguished figure in the field of Biochemistry with a long and impactful career in both research and education. She earned her MSc in Biochemistry from the University of Sofia, Faculty of Biology, in 1969. Building on her expertise, she completed her PhD in 1976, titled “Participation of Cytochrome C in the Electron Transfer and Energy Coupling in Liver Mitochondria” under the Bulgarian Higher Attestation Commission. In 2004, she was awarded her DSc with the dissertation “Fundamentals of Web-based Learning in Biochemistry” from the Bulgarian Higher Attestation Commission, Specialized Scientific Council in Pedagogy. Prof. Dr. Kossekova held the position of Professor of Biochemistry at the Medical University of Sofia from 2007 to 2017, following her previous roles as Associate Professor (1996-2006), Senior Assistant Professor (1980-1996), and Assistant Professor (1970-1979) at the same institution.

Research Interests and Contributions🔬

Prof. Dr. Kossekova’s research has made significant contributions to Biochemistry and Medical Biochemistry, particularly in the areas of protein interactions and biochemistry education. She conducted fluorometric studies on the interaction between tetracycline and bovine serum albumin, providing deeper insights into protein-drug interactions. Additionally, her work on the characterization of pyridoxal phosphate as an optical label has advanced the methods used for measuring electrostatic potentials in proteins. Prof. Kossekova has also studied the role of cytochrome c in mitochondria, exploring its involvement in electron transfer and energy coupling. In her educational endeavors, she focused on integrating interactive, multimedia-based problem-solving learning into Medical Biochemistry, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and clinical practice. Her efforts led to the creation of Bulgaria’s first virtual learning environment and e-course in Biochemistry, which was later published as a colored Bulgarian textbook.

Professional Memberships🔗

Prof. Dr. Kossekova is a respected member of The Bulgarian Biochemical, Biophysical, and Molecular Biology Society, which is affiliated with the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS). Her contributions to both research and education have earned her a prominent place within the scientific community, where she continues to inspire and shape the future of biochemistry in both medical and academic fields.
