🎓Early Education and Career Development

Professor Xue Huping, PhD, earned his doctorate from Fudan University, one of China’s prestigious institutions. He continued his academic journey at McGill University between 2009 and 2011. In 2012, he joined the College of Animal Science and Technology at Northwest A&F University, where he now serves as a professor and PhD supervisor. Over the years, he has established himself as a significant figure in the academic community, with roles as an evaluating expert for the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and communication review expert for dissertations of China’s Ministry of Education.

🔬💡Research Focus and Contributions

Professor Xue’s research is dedicated to addressing the critical need for antibiotic substitutes in livestock breeding, particularly in response to China’s policy that prohibits the use of antibiotics in animal feed. His team is focused on antimicrobial peptides as a sustainable solution. The research primarily encompasses three key areas: First, they are mining new antimicrobial peptides from natural products and working to enhance their efficacy. Second, the team is investigating the mechanisms of antimicrobial peptides and their interactions with Staphylococcus aureus, a common and harmful bacteria in livestock. Lastly, they are working on developing high-expression systems using Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, lactic acid bacteria, and Pichia pastoris to achieve large-scale production of antimicrobial peptides. To support this extensive research, Professor Xue’s lab is equipped with state-of-the-art instruments and equipment worth 2 million dollars, enabling in-depth studies in molecular biology, cell biology, and microbiology.

🏆Honors and Recognition

Professor Xue has received numerous accolades for his groundbreaking work in antimicrobial research. Notably, he was the first winner of the Second Prize of Natural Science at the Shaanxi Province Science and Technology Award in 2019, for his work on the generation, transmission, and prevention of antibiotic resistance in bovine mastitis caused by Staphylococcus aureus. Furthermore, he serves as the Director of a university-level excellent study demonstration class, underscoring his leadership and commitment to education.

🏛️Professional Affiliations and Leadership

Professor Xue is deeply embedded in various academic communities. He is a delegate to the national genetics congress, a standing member of the Shaanxi Pharmacological Society, and a member of the Chinese Society of Microbiology. His influence extends beyond research, contributing to the broader field of genetics and microbiology through his leadership and expert roles.
