Dr. Daryoush Sanaei holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran. His doctoral thesis was titled “An investigation on removal of Hydrogen Sulfur using electrochemical technology: Utilization of power generation from MFCs as driving force towards electrochemical reactions.” He also earned an M.Sc. in Environmental Engineering from Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Iran and a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering from Hamedan University of Medical Sciences, Iran.

Research Experience

Dr. Sanaei has extensive experience as a Researcher in Environmental Engineering, where he led and contributed to several innovative projects. As a Senior Research Fellow, he worked on developing Manganese-iron doped Chitosan-engineered coconut coil fiber biochar as an efficient catalyst for enhanced oxygen reduction in air-cathode microbial fuel cells. He also focused on improving power generation through the synthesis of hematite nanowire-arrays and the study of electron transfer via redox-active coconut biochar particles.

He served as a Project Assistant Level-II at the Tehran University of Medical Sciences Institute for Environmental Research, where he investigated mixed metal oxides/PVA/cellulose waste paper beads as adsorbents for the removal of ciprofloxacin and Yellow 17 dye from aqueous solutions. Additionally, as a Project Fellow, he contributed to environmental management in the Iranian Aluminum Company, Tehran. Since, he has been engaged in a project at Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences focusing on nitrate and sulfate removal from aqueous solutions using Magnetite MAF-X27-Cl-OH, with particular emphasis on the effects of chloride and phosphate ions as interfering materials.

Dr. Sanaei has demonstrated outstanding teaching excellence across various levels. My educational background includes completing primary education at the Primary School of KIREBE (1992 – 1999), followed by Ordinary Level studies at Musanze High School (2000 – 2003) and Advanced Level at APPEDI MARIE-REINE RWAZA (2004 – 2006). I earned a Bachelor of Science in Physics with Second Class Honours, Upper Division from the National University of Rwanda (NUR) (2008 – 2011). I further specialized with a Bachelor of Science Honours in Astrophysics and Space Science from the University of Cape Town (UCT) (2014), obtained a Masters in Physics from Rhodes University (RU) (2015 – 2017), and completed my PhD in Physics at the University of KwaZulu Natal (UKZN) (2019 – 2022).

For my Master’s Project, titled Ionospheric Disturbances during Magnetic Storms at SANAE, I completed coursework with an aggregate of 82%. My PhD Project focused on The effects of Traveling Ionospheric Disturbances on SuperDARN near range echoes, contributing significantly to the field.

From February 2012 to February 2014, I served as a Teacher of Natural Sciences at Musanze District, where I was responsible for teaching, invigilating, and marking physics exams, leading to a significant increase in student pass rates. I then took on the role of Tutorial Assistant of Physics at the Ruhengeri Institute of Higher Education (INES) from February 2014 to February 2017, where I ensured all students passed their modules through effective lecturing and exam preparation. At Regina Pacis Secondary School (September 2017 – September 2018), I prepared courses and marked exams, resulting in a student achieving the highest score in national examinations for the first time. From January 2018 to March 2019, as an Assistant Lecturer of Physics at the University of Kibungo, I ensured quality teaching and supervised student dissertations while participating in departmental meetings. Currently, since June 2022, I am a Postdoctoral Researcher at the South African National Space Agency (SANSA), where I conduct research, co-supervise students, and publish articles while also working as a forecaster in a Space Weather center.

From 1994 to 1998, he studied at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Cairo University, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmaceutical Science, graduating with Excellent with honors.In March 2000, he began his postgraduate studies at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Cairo University, registering for a Master’s degree in pharmaceutical science, specializing in the pharmacognosy department.
